  • Be A Good Girl because it was both the hardest and most rewarding experience of my film career, to date. I legit thought I was going to die from emotional wounds. Alas, I live! Thank God.

  • Fave Ugandan filmmaker: Me, duh. I’m yung, I’m fine, I’m growin’, I got a lot to give.

Fave African filmmaker: Sembène Ousmane, for telegraphing the everyday chaos of post-colonial Africa into something tender and meaningful.

Fave American filmmaker #1: Steven Spielberg for the sheer spectacle and heart he wields in his practice, and for making me lose my breath with some dope ass scenes. I think about Close Encounters of The Third Kind every other week.

Fave American filmmaker #2: Ava DuVernay for singeing my heart, with every film she makes. I enter one way, I leave in a thousand pieces, reborn.

  • Shonda Rhimes. Lbffr.

The next person on my GOAT writers’ list is Mara Brock Akil. Honey chile, she can write.

Jack mf’n Thorne is a top dawg in this game. Don’t play with that man’s speed, it’s lightnin’, baby.

  • As a child, it was True Lies (1994).

written & directed by James Cameron

Jamie Lee-Curtis brought the house down with that corridor makeover and subsequent sexy dance. Will never forget.

As a woman of la tierra, my all-time favorite film is Black Panther (2018).

written by Ryan Coogler & Joe Robert Cole; directed by Ryan he-self.

The Blackness, the Africanness, and the Diasporaness of Ryan and his team’s creation across departments is unmatched yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Forever inspired. Wakanda Forevah!

  • It’s the end of November. Rain is blanketing Nairobi like it didn’t just flood the country back in April.

All I can think about is Gladiator II. Denzel’s rings. Denzel’s kimonos. Denzel’s grey-ringed eyes. Denzel. Pascal. Mescal. Them three can get it. Actorly and Personally.

Yet to watch Jon Chu’s Wicked, so this could change.
